About Brokenwood in Hunter Valley
Brokenwood Wines was established in 1970 by James Halliday, John Beeston, and Tony Albert. They then paid just $970 per acre for 10 acres in the Foothills of the Brokenback Ranges. Although it was first destined to be a cricket ground, it was turned into a vineyard for Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Eric, the first vintage, was picked in 1973, and a new winery was built in 1975 to accommodate the growing production. The heavy clay soil of the area produced vintages of low yield but with great flavour in the berries, providing a very distinctive wine style that is still evident in all broken wood red wines.
In 1982, Brokenwood began producing white wines as well. Several of the wines produced here have won awards, such as the Restaurant and Catering Trophy at the Royal Sydney Wine Show for Best Wine from a Small Producer, which was awarded to the first Rayner Vineyard Shiraz in 1973.
Brokenwood also released its first ILR-Aged Semillon in 1997. Their Semilloon won the Trophy for Best Australian White Varietal under £10 and Best International Dry White under £10 at the inaugural Decanter World Wine Awards.
More recently, the new cellar door and The Wood Restaurant were built in 2018. To no one’s surprise, after being open for only 5 months, the Brokenwood Cellar Door won Best Cellar Door of the Year at the Hunter Valley Legends Awards.
Since then, both various Shiraz and Semillon varietals have won many awards. It is the ultimate Hunter Valley winery because its cellar door upholds the highest of standards while providing its guests with the most premium wines available in Australia.
Some of Brokenwood’s flagship wines that every visitor must try, including its Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, its ILR Reserve Semillon, and its HBA Shiraz. Of course, these are just a few examples, with their single vineyard wines being some of the most highly regarded in Hunter Valley. They all pair perfectly with the modern menu, characterized by fresh, local seafood and produce full of life and flavour.
Between the cellar door, The Wood Restaurant, and the expansive outdoor terrace, Brokenwood wines make for an excellent destination to travel to, and there's really no better way than to do so by helicopter!

What an amazing experience!! 🚁💯‼️ 🤯 Had the privilege of flying over Sydney 🇦🇺 👀🤙🏽 What a view from up so high. Thanks Rotor One and team for making the experience so exciting and being so accommodating on this trip! Will definitely be looking you up again when I’m in Melbourne for another amazing flight over a different city 🏙!! 😉🤯🚁💯‼️
Amazing experience. I flew my wife and daughter family around Sydney Harbour on a helicopter ride. I felt safe and comfortable in the air conditioned chopper. There was a short safety briefing at the start, and the highlight was definitely seeing Sydney from above.
It was a really great experience for both of us. Big thanks to Rotor One and Ed for making it one of the best memories of our lifetime.
