That said, if you want to visit Margaret River, but don't want to drive yourself, there are a number of options available, such as guided tours via bus, and even luxurious helicopter flights that allow you to see the path from Perth to the Margaret River Wine Region from a bird's-eye-view - as well as stop at a number of renowned wineries for wine tasting and more.

The Margaret River Drive: How to Get There

Going on a road trip to the Margaret River Region is always great fun - from gorgeous white sand beaches to art galleries galore, and so much more.

That said, there are various ways to get to Margaret River and to find all of the hidden gems along the way. Let's find out how to get from Perth to Margaret River.

Drive by Car

Generally speaking, driving is the most flexible way to get from Perth to Margaret River, a 3.5 hour route over two highways, with opportunities to stop in locations such as Bunbury, Busselton, or Dunsborough.

Using your own or renting a car allows you to travel at your pace, take detours along side roads, and visit a range of white sand beaches and wineries that are not accessible via publish transport.

That said, if you plan on going to any Margaret River town and doing some wine tasting, you'll likely need a designated driver.

If you're a solo traveller or family that wants maximum flexibility, taking a drive south west from Perth is the way to go, but if wine tasting and relaxation are your main goals, taking a bus, coach, or even a helicopter will be much better options.

Travel From Perth to Margaret River

By Helicopter

By far the most spectacular way to travel from Perth to Margaret River is by helicopter. There are many options available, with basic helicopter transfers from Perth to Margaret River, as well as full-blown helicopter winery tours - both of which are offered by Rotor One.

What's so great about taking a helicopter to Margaret River is that travel time is greatly reduced, taking just 75-90 minutes, instead of a three hour drive, or longer.

Getting in a helicopter is a thrill in of itself, and moreover, it offers a great way to see the ground below from a new perspective, with the Swan River, Indian Ocean coastline, and Busselton Jetty all looking magnificent from the air.

The simple fact is that if you're looking for something special, unique, and exciting, then forget the Margaret River road trip and fly from Perth to Margaret River in a private helicopter.

One of Rotor One's most popular options is the Margaret River Region helicopter winery tour, which takes you to three famous wineries for wine tasting and gourmet meals, including Swings & Roundabouts, Amelia Park, and Aravina Estate - each of which offers its own special charm, wine varietals, and tasty meals.

By Bus or Coach

There are a variety of operators in Western Australia that drive busses to the Margaret River wine region, with plenty of daily services that run back and forth along the Indian Ocean, between these two areas.

This trip will take even longer than by car, mainly because busses drive slower, mak several planned stops, and must accommodate all passengers.

However, busses are air-conditioned, affordable, and ideal for those who don't want to worry about navigating unfamiliar roads or having to drive after consuming a few glasses of wine.

The downside is that you don't have much freedom when you get to the Margaret River region, as you'll have to adhere to the bus or coach schedule.

All things considered, if you are a solo traveller without access to a car or you're travelling on a budget, then this is a decent option to consider as far as a Margaret River road trip is concerned.

By Guided Tour

You could also take a Margaret River road trip in the form of a guided tour, which will also happen on a bus or coach. The difference here is that with a guided tour, you'll have an expert providing commentary along the way, along with a set itinerary.

For those who love learning, don't want to drive themselves, who want to visit wineries and breweries without having to drive themselves, and for those who don't mind being limited by a strict itinerary, this is a good choice.

That said, the fact that you have to adhere to a strict schedule is a big drawback for many, not to mention that this is by far not the most luxurious option available. Keeping this in mind, it's a great option for those who like the guided experience.
